Charity Art raffle

The Charity Art Raffle held on the 6th of March was a fun night and drew a good crowd of artists, friends, collectors and supporters of the charity. We had over 90 artists donate work, including two Turner prize winners and sold 97 tickets so the chances of winning were pretty high. The funds went to Stepping Stones Nigeria, an small grassroots charity that works towards the helping children stigmatised and abandoned as child witches. That charity was chosen after trying to find a sound, secular charity with a good reputation for keeping their overheads low and involvement with local community groups in Nigeria.

We had artists of all ages and stages donate and there were some really nice moments such as Boxing-Club member Jacob winning our friend Luke Dowds work and Renee Soo's work being won by young artist Dan Coopey who had been coveting it for weeks. Also one lucky guy behind the bar won both the David Noonan and the Pablo Bronstien. Retirement on the horizon perhaps?

We had a compare/ host who was Blackpool in style (so I was told! Is that a good thing?) giving it some and a busy bar and DJ's. Big thanks to all who helped out...including Sam for all his hard work and help cleaning, El and Jacob for donating work and Dhiraj helping, purchasing tickets and adding to the party atmosphere!

We have raised and donated £1911.51 which the charity are very happy with and raised awareness of this issue.

Maintenance Workshop running from 11am until 3pm at Limehouse Town
Hall, 646 Commercial Road.

We're fully stocked up with tools, tips and advice to help you keep
your bicycle running smoothly. Been wondering how to adjust brakes &
gears, fix punctures, get rid of those annoying squeaks and rattles?

From 14th - 22nd November the Space Hijackers will be taking part in the Signs Of Revolt exhibition in London's trendy East End. Come see our exhibit of the last 10 years of our work and how it fits into the wider picture of anti-capitalist, anti-corporate and anti-war protest. Along with The Labofii, Movement of the Imagination, The Rebel Clown Army, War Boutique and many others we'll be putting on a show journeying from Seattle to Copenhagen.

Also on Thu 19th November we are moving our monthly meeting to the exhibition space to show people how we plan and hopefully meet some new faces. If you've been lurking on this site for a while then now's the time to come out of the woodwork.

3RD Annual Raft Race

The Rules

There are not many rules and the few there are will be made during and after the race. You are allowed boats if you have made or modified them yourself. Pedals: Yes, Sails: Yes, Motors: No, Running along the bank: No!

Competitors – Ready!

It’s not hard to make a raft. You can use just about anything that floats along with some oars. Last year Arthur and I stayed dry on 30 balloons. The race is roughly 400 metres long over smooth terrain. The canal is fairly shallow.

Operation Ivy League at the Barbican

This Sunday the Space Hijackers will be presenting Operation Ivy League at the Barbican

Back in 2007 Agent Ladybird (http://www.storiesfromspace.co.uk) came to us with a plan, to sneak into the city, find hidden corners and plant Ivy all over the square mile. The hope being that the ivy would take, gradually grow up the walls, then before long pull down the buildings of the city. Our first crop planting session went well, so well infact that we're off to do it again

Meet either at 12 midday in the church yard of Shoreditch Church St Leonard, on the corner of Hackney Rd and Shoreditch High St, for a spot of supply gathering at Columbia Rd Flower Market, or meet at 2pm outside the front doors of the Barbican Art Gallery.

Bleeding edge environmentally friendly sound systems.

Sam Valiant from the Boxing Club is busy designing a fleet of self contained sound systems for the Burning Man festival. The units are designed to work as part of a wireless "smart sound web" with auto self aligning, phasing, and time delay functions meaning that wherever you are in relation to to the portable systems, the sound will always be in sync. The ultra high efficiency Class H+ amplifers are powered by high capacity 12v batteries augmented with focussed poly-crystalline silicon photovoltaic panels which convert sunlight into 300w of power.

The Erotic Book Club

Held on the Last Thursday of the month, the Erotic Book Club is a small gathering to devour and discuss the naughty masterpieces of literature. We shall be savouring both modern and classic filth, erotic fiction and personal memoirs by both male and female authors.

Loolie recently unveiled her newest work, created in conjunction with students at the Alderman Blaxill school in Colchester.

School of Everything in the Europas

Greenman, one of the Boxing Club members, is also a co-founder of School of Everything, and internet startup out to re-invent education. His company is up for an award in the Europas, as one of Europe's top social innovation start-ups.

Much of the energy behind The School of Everything was inspired by another Boxing Club project, The University of Openness (UO). The UO ran for many years, but has now become an archive site. The project still has many fans, who long for it's return.

Update: School of Everything was the "Honorable Mention" . Close, but no cigar.

Dorkbot #62

The Boxing Club hosted Dorkbot #62 on June 23. The usual host of Strange things with electricity came out of the closet - as did a BBC technology camera crew. The idea of filming things "live" gets stretched a little, and we did have to do a few re-takes, but the eventual story works pretty well.

Maude McCan Gallery

The Boxing Club was pleased to host the cult ‘Maude McCan Gallery’ on Saturday 20th June, 2009.

With a Live performance and private view of ‘Nostalgia for Mainframes’ a new work specially created for the gallery by John Wild and accompanied by spoken word from Robin Bale and rapping from South Africa’s ‘Be’.
